When Leigh founded Foster Care Closet in 2006, she collected used clothing in her garage to help foster families provide for the urgent needs of the children in their care.
Since then our mission has evolved to focus on restoring dignity to the children in crisis.
Now Leigh and our purchasing volunteers travel to Las Vegas twice a year to build relationships with wholesaler vendors, who give us discounts on their already low prices, so each dollar donated to Foster Care Closet stretches as far as it possibly can.

An example of our wholesale power: Leigh purchases cozy outfits for toddlers from businesses like Cutie Patootie, a mother-daughter team, who give us half off because they’ve come to share our passion.
A cozy winter outfit can cost between $30-40 at retail stores but we get outfits for toddlers from $8-9 through these wholesale relationships.
Another concern we are sensitive to is the way the clothes feel. Leigh remembers when she was little…finding her clothes itchy, rough, or too tight, and we have received feedback from our foster families how their foster children share those same sensory issues. Leigh makes sure to include items in her purchase that are soft, loose and a variety of textures for our foster kids to choose from.
Kids who enter foster care may never have had the opportunity to shop for new clothes for themselves – they may have never had the chance to pick out the style, texture and fit of clothes they like best.
